California Introduces New Driver’s License Design for 2018

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Department of Motor Vehicles announced today the introduction of a new driver’s license design for 2018. The updated design features enhanced security features aimed at reducing the risk of fraud and identity theft.

The new driver’s license design, which will be rolled out in phases over the coming months, includes a number of advanced security features. These features include a tactile laser engraving, as well as detailed microprinting and intricate background designs. The license will also feature a new color scheme and layout to make it more visually appealing and easy to read.

In addition to the updated design, the new California driver’s license will also include a number of technological upgrades. The new license will be equipped with a barcode that can be scanned by law enforcement officers and other officials, allowing them to quickly access the driver’s information. This will help streamline traffic stops, reduce wait times, and enhance overall security.

“We are constantly working to improve the security of our driver’s licenses and identification cards,” said California DMV Director Jean Shiomoto. “The new design and features of the 2018 California driver’s license will make it even more difficult for fraudsters to replicate, further protecting the identities of California residents.”

The introduction of the new driver’s license design comes as part of a broader effort by the California DMV to modernize and enhance its services. In recent years, the DMV has made significant investments in technology and infrastructure to improve customer service and streamline processes.

“We are committed to providing Californians with the best possible service and ensuring the security of their personal information,” said Shiomoto. “The new driver’s license design is just one example of our ongoing efforts to enhance the efficiency and security of our operations.”

The new California driver’s license design will be available to residents renewing or applying for a license starting in January 2018. Current license holders will not be required to obtain the updated license until their current one expires.

In addition to the new driver’s license design, the California DMV has also announced plans to introduce a new REAL ID-compliant driver’s license option in 2018. The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, sets higher security standards for state-issued identification cards, including driver’s licenses. The new REAL ID-compliant driver’s license will be necessary for Californians to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities starting in October 2020.

“We want to make sure that Californians are aware of the upcoming changes to driver’s licenses and identification cards,” said Shiomoto. “We encourage everyone to stay informed and plan ahead to ensure they have the proper identification when traveling or accessing federal facilities.”

Overall, the introduction of the new driver’s license design in California for 2018 represents a significant step forward in enhancing the security and efficiency of the state’s identification cards. With advanced security features, improved technology, and a commitment to customer service, the California DMV is working to provide residents with the best possible experience when obtaining or renewing their driver’s license.
