California Introduces New Features for 2021 Driver’s Licenses
In an effort to enhance security and protect against identity theft, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced the release of new features for driver’s licenses issued in 2021. These new features are designed to make it even more difficult for counterfeiters and fraudsters to produce fake IDs.
One of the most significant changes to the 2021 California driver’s license is the inclusion of a raised signature and raised DMV seal. This tactile feature makes it easier for law enforcement officials and bouncers at bars and clubs to quickly verify the authenticity of a driver’s license by feeling for the raised elements. This is especially important in low-light situations where examining the card visually may be challenging.
In addition to the raised signature and DMV seal, the 2021 California driver’s license will also feature a new “Optically Variable Image Device” (OVID). This advanced security feature consists of a hologram that changes appearance when viewed from different angles. This makes it extremely difficult for counterfeiters to accurately replicate the holographic image, further protecting against fraud.
Another new security measure included on the updated California driver’s license is a UV light watermark. When held under ultraviolet light, a hidden image or pattern becomes visible, providing yet another layer of security against counterfeiters.
Furthermore, the 2021 California driver’s license will include a “Real ID” indicator for those who have upgraded to a Real ID-compliant license. Real ID-compliant licenses are required for domestic air travel and access to federal facilities, so having a clear indicator on the license will make it easier for individuals to determine if their ID is compliant with these regulations.
Aside from enhanced security features, the 2021 California driver’s license will also have a new design, featuring updated graphics and a refreshed color scheme. This aesthetic update not only gives the license a more modern look but also helps to differentiate it from previous versions, making it easier to spot a fake.
“We are constantly working to improve the security of our driver’s licenses and identification cards to prevent fraud and protect our residents,” said the Director of the California DMV. “The new features included on the 2021 driver’s license are state-of-the-art and will help keep Californians safe and secure.”
The rollout of the 2021 California driver’s license is expected to begin in early January, with newly issued licenses incorporating these new security features. Existing license holders will be able to obtain a new license with these features upon renewal or replacement of their current license.
Overall, the introduction of these new security features for the 2021 California driver’s license represents a significant step forward in the fight against identity theft and fraud. By incorporating advanced technologies and enhanced design elements, the California DMV is ensuring that its licenses remain among the most secure in the country.
