Georgia Introduces Enhanced Driver’s Licenses for 2022

ATLANTA – In a move aimed at improving security and providing more convenience to residents, the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) has announced the introduction of enhanced driver’s licenses for 2022.

The new enhanced driver’s licenses will feature advanced security features, including laser engraving and holographic images, to help prevent counterfeiting and fraud. These licenses will also be compliant with the Real ID Act, which sets minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.

Additionally, the enhanced driver’s licenses will be equipped with contactless technology, allowing residents to use them for secure access to federal facilities and for domestic air travel, without the need for a separate Real ID-compliant identification.

“We are excited to introduce enhanced driver’s licenses to Georgia residents,” said DDS Commissioner John Smith. “These new licenses will offer increased security and convenience, making it easier for our residents to prove their identity and travel domestically.”

Residents who wish to obtain an enhanced driver’s license will need to provide additional documentation, such as a birth certificate or passport, to verify their identity. The cost of an enhanced driver’s license will be slightly higher than a standard driver’s license, reflecting the enhanced security features and additional benefits.

The introduction of enhanced driver’s licenses comes as part of Georgia’s ongoing efforts to modernize its driver’s license system and improve security measures. In recent years, the DDS has implemented new technologies, such as facial recognition software, to enhance the security of driver’s licenses and identification cards.

“We are committed to ensuring the security and integrity of our driver’s license system,” said Commissioner Smith. “By introducing enhanced driver’s licenses, we are taking another step towards that goal and providing our residents with a secure and convenient form of identification.”

The DDS will begin issuing enhanced driver’s licenses in early 2022, with residents given the option to upgrade to the new licenses when renewing their existing driver’s license. The DDS will also offer information and assistance to help residents understand the new features and benefits of enhanced driver’s licenses.

“We want to make the transition to enhanced driver’s licenses as smooth and simple as possible for our residents,” said Commissioner Smith. “We will be providing resources and support to help residents understand the new requirements and make informed decisions about upgrading to enhanced driver’s licenses.”

Residents who choose not to upgrade to an enhanced driver’s license will still be able to use their existing driver’s license for everyday activities, such as driving and proving their identity. However, they may need to provide additional identification, such as a passport, for certain activities that require a Real ID-compliant form of identification.

“We understand that not everyone may want or need an enhanced driver’s license,” said Commissioner Smith. “We respect our residents’ choices and will continue to provide a range of options for obtaining and using driver’s licenses in Georgia.”

Overall, the introduction of enhanced driver’s licenses in Georgia represents a positive step towards improving security and convenience for residents. By offering advanced security features and compliance with the Real ID Act, the new licenses will provide residents with a secure and convenient form of identification for years to come.
