Maryland Governor Hogan Announces Plans for New Digital Driver’s License
In a move to modernize the state’s identification system, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan announced today plans to introduce a new digital driver’s license for all residents. The pilot program, set to launch in early 2023, will allow Maryland drivers to access their licenses on their smartphones through a secure app.
“This new digital driver’s license will not only make it more convenient for Maryland residents to carry their identification with them at all times, but it will also enhance security measures and reduce instances of fraud,” Governor Hogan stated during a press conference at the state capitol.
The current Maryland driver’s license, a physical card that individuals must carry with them at all times, has been in use for decades. However, with the advancement of technology and the prevalence of smartphones, many states have begun exploring the option of digital licenses as a more convenient and secure alternative.
Under the new system, Maryland drivers will be able to download the digital license app onto their smartphones and input their license information. The app will utilize biometric authentication, such as facial recognition or fingerprint scanning, to ensure the security of the digital license and prevent unauthorized access.
