Can You Renew Your Massachusetts Driver’s License Online

In a move aimed at increasing convenience and efficiency for Massachusetts residents, the state’s Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) has announced that starting next month, drivers will be able to renew their driver’s licenses online. This new online renewal option comes as part of a wider effort by the RMV to modernize its services and improve customer experience.

The online renewal process will be available to all eligible Massachusetts residents who have a Class D, Class DM (Driver’s Manual), or Class DJ (Junior Operator) driver’s license. To be eligible for online renewal, drivers must have a valid license that is due for renewal within the next six months, have a clean driving record with no outstanding violations or suspensions, and have a valid email address on file with the RMV.

“We are excited to offer this new online renewal option to our customers,” said RMV Registrar Rachel Kaprielian. “We understand that our customers lead busy lives, and we want to make it as easy as possible for them to take care of their driver’s license renewals without having to visit an RMV branch in person.”

To renew their driver’s license online, eligible drivers will need to visit the RMV’s website and follow the step-by-step instructions provided. The online renewal process will require drivers to verify their identity by providing their license number, date of birth, and the last four digits of their Social Security number. Drivers will also need to pay the renewal fee using a credit or debit card.

Once the online renewal is complete, drivers will receive a temporary driver’s license via email, which they can print out and use until their new license arrives in the mail within 7-10 business days. The new license will have the same expiration date as the previous one and will be valid for another five years.

In addition to being able to renew their driver’s licenses online, Massachusetts residents will also have the option to sign up for automatic license renewal reminders through the RMV’s website. By enrolling in this service, drivers will receive an email notification 60 days before their license is due for renewal, allowing them to renew online without any delays or last-minute rush.

The introduction of online driver’s license renewal is part of the RMV’s broader efforts to enhance its digital services and streamline processes for customers. Over the past year, the RMV has rolled out several online services, including vehicle registration renewals, license and registration address changes, and insurance suspension payments, all aimed at reducing in-person visits to RMV branches and improving customer satisfaction.

“We are committed to providing our customers with easy and convenient ways to access our services,” said Registrar Kaprielian. “By expanding our online offerings, we hope to make it simpler for people to interact with the RMV and get the services they need from the comfort of their own homes.”

The online driver’s license renewal option will officially launch on July 1st, and the RMV encourages eligible drivers to take advantage of this new feature to renew their licenses quickly and easily.
