Delaware Rolls Out New Driver’s License Design

The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) recently announced the launch of a new driver’s license design aimed at enhancing security features and modernizing the look of the state-issued identification cards. The new design, which will be gradually rolled out over the next few months, is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to combat identity theft and fraud.

According to DMV officials, the new driver’s license design incorporates several advanced security features that make it more difficult to counterfeit or tamper with. These features include a holographic overlay, ultraviolet ink, and a raised tactile feature that can be felt by touch. Additionally, the new design includes a bar code that can be scanned by law enforcement officials and other authorized personnel to quickly verify the authenticity of the card.

“We are constantly evaluating and updating our security measures to stay ahead of potential threats,” said Delaware DMV Director Jennifer Cohan. “The new driver’s license design represents the latest advancements in technology and design, and we believe it will greatly enhance the security of our state-issued identification cards.”

In addition to the security enhancements, the new driver’s license design also features a more modern and streamlined look. The card includes the holder’s photo, name, date of birth, address, and signature, as well as the expiration date of the card and the issuing authority. The design also includes the state seal and other graphic elements that reflect the state’s heritage and identity.

“We wanted to create a driver’s license that is not only secure but also visually appealing and easy to use,” said Cohan. “We believe that the new design achieves that goal and will be well-received by our customers.”

The rollout of the new driver’s license design will be phased in gradually, with existing license holders receiving the new design when they renew their licenses. The DMV is also planning to offer the new design to new applicants and individuals seeking replacements for lost or stolen licenses.

“We understand that some drivers may be disappointed that they do not receive the new design right away,” said Cohan. “But we want to ensure a smooth transition and avoid any disruptions in service. We ask for our customers’ patience and cooperation as we implement the new design.”

The introduction of the new driver’s license design comes at a time when identity theft and fraud are on the rise across the country. According to the Federal Trade Commission, there were over 1.3 million cases of identity theft reported in 2020, representing a 45% increase from the previous year. In response to this growing threat, state governments are taking steps to strengthen the security of their identification cards and driver’s licenses.

“We are committed to protecting the personal information of our residents and safeguarding their identities,” said Cohan. “The new driver’s license design is just one of the many ways we are working to combat identity theft and fraud. We encourage all Delaware residents to be vigilant and take steps to protect themselves from scams and data breaches.”

In addition to the new driver’s license design, the Delaware DMV offers other resources and services to help residents protect their identities and prevent fraud. These include online account management, identity theft alerts, and fraud prevention tips. The DMV also works closely with law enforcement agencies and other government entities to investigate and prosecute cases of identity theft and fraud.

“We take the security of our identification cards very seriously,” said Cohan. “We are continuously looking for ways to improve our security measures and enhance the integrity of our driver’s licenses. The new design is just the latest example of our commitment to safeguarding the personal information of our residents.”

Overall, the introduction of the new driver’s license design in Delaware is a positive development that will benefit both the state government and its residents. By enhancing the security features and modernizing the look of the identification cards, the DMV is taking proactive steps to protect against identity theft and fraud. Delaware residents can rest assured that their personal information is in safe hands with the new driver’s license design.
