Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has implemented a new restriction on the driver’s licenses of individuals under the age of 21. This new restriction, known as restriction 9, comes as a part of the state’s efforts to ensure the safety of young drivers on the roads.
Under restriction 9, individuals with a Virginia driver’s license who are under the age of 21 will be prohibited from operating a motor vehicle between the hours of midnight and 4 a.m. This restriction is aimed at reducing the number of accidents involving young drivers, who are statistically more likely to be involved in crashes during these late-night hours.
According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States. In fact, drivers aged 16 to 19 are three times more likely to be involved in a deadly crash compared to older drivers.
Restriction 9 is just one of the many measures being taken by the Virginia DMV to address the issue of teen driving safety. In addition to the nighttime driving restriction, the state also requires young drivers to complete a driver’s education course and maintain a clean driving record in order to obtain a full, unrestricted license.
