California Secretary of State Announces Limited Driver’s License Program
In an effort to address the growing demand for driver’s licenses among undocumented immigrants in California, Secretary of State Alex Padilla announced the launch of a limited driver’s license program for individuals who are unable to provide proof of legal presence in the United States. The program, which is scheduled to begin on January 1st, 2022, will allow undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver’s license with certain restrictions.
Under the limited driver’s license program, eligible applicants will be required to provide proof of identity, California residency, and age, as well as pass a written and driving test. However, unlike a standard driver’s license, the limited driver’s license will be marked with a distinctive design and will expire after two years. In addition, individuals who obtain a limited driver’s license will not be allowed to use it as proof of identity for federal purposes, such as boarding a domestic flight or entering a federal building.
Secretary Padilla emphasized the importance of the limited driver’s license program in improving road safety and reducing the number of uninsured drivers on California’s roads. “By providing undocumented immigrants with access to driver’s licenses, we are not only helping them to participate more fully in society but also making our roads safer for all Californians,” he said in a statement.
