The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has recently announced new guidelines for renewing driver’s licenses in the state. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, ADOT has implemented several changes to make the renewal process easier and more convenient for Arizona residents.
One of the major changes to the renewal process is the option for online renewal. Residents can now renew their driver’s licenses online through the ADOT website. This streamlined process allows individuals to renew their licenses from the comfort of their own homes, eliminating the need to visit a MVD office in person. Online renewal is available to individuals who are between the ages of 21 and 65 and who have not had any major violations on their driving record.
In order to renew online, individuals must have a valid credit or debit card to pay the renewal fee. The online renewal process is quick and easy, with most individuals able to complete the renewal in just a few minutes. Once the renewal is processed, individuals will receive their new driver’s license in the mail within 15 days.
For individuals who prefer to renew their driver’s licenses in person, ADOT has also made changes to the process to ensure the safety of both customers and employees. MVD offices have implemented social distancing measures and enhanced cleaning protocols to protect against the spread of COVID-19. Customers are required to wear face masks while inside MVD offices, and appointments are strongly encouraged to reduce wait times and limit the number of people in the office at one time.
In addition to online and in-person renewal options, ADOT has also extended the expiration dates for driver’s licenses that were set to expire during the pandemic. Licenses that expired between March 1, 2020, and December 31, 2020, have been extended for one year past their original expiration date. This extension provides individuals with ample time to renew their licenses without facing penalties or having to retake the written and road tests.
“We understand that the COVID-19 pandemic has created challenges for individuals trying to renew their driver’s licenses,” said ADOT Director John Halikowski. “We are committed to providing flexible options for renewal to ensure the safety and convenience of all Arizona residents.”
In addition to the changes in the renewal process, ADOT has also updated the requirements for obtaining a Real ID-compliant driver’s license. Starting October 1, 2021, individuals will need a Real ID-compliant license to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities. To obtain a Real ID-compliant license, individuals must provide additional documentation, such as a birth certificate or passport, to verify their identity.
Overall, the changes implemented by ADOT aim to make the driver’s license renewal process easier and more convenient for Arizona residents. With the option for online renewal, extended expiration dates, and enhanced safety measures in MVD offices, individuals can renew their licenses with minimal hassle and risk of exposure to COVID-19. ADOT encourages all residents to take advantage of these new options to ensure they have a valid driver’s license and are prepared for the upcoming Real ID deadline.
