California DMV Driver’s License Fee Set to Increase in 2022
Starting January 1, 2022, Californians looking to obtain or renew their driver’s licenses will have to dig a little deeper into their pockets as the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced a fee increase for driver’s licenses. The fee hike comes after nearly two decades of stagnant prices for driver’s licenses in the state.
The new fee structure will see an increase of $5 for the basic Class C driver’s license, bringing the total cost to $40. This fee covers a five-year period, making the annual cost of a driver’s license just $8. While the increase may seem minimal, it marks the first fee hike for driver’s licenses in California since 2003.
According to the DMV, the fee increase is necessary to cover rising administrative costs and to fund improvements to the DMV’s services. The DMV has been under fire in recent years for long wait times, outdated technology, and frustrating bureaucracy.
