North Carolina Introduces New Real ID Driver’s License Program

In an effort to enhance security measures and combat identity theft, North Carolina has introduced a new Real ID driver’s license program. Starting this year, residents of the Tar Heel State will have the option to upgrade their current driver’s licenses to Real ID-compliant cards, which contain additional security features designed to prevent fraud and verify the identity of the cardholder.

The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, with the goal of establishing minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. While the implementation of the law was delayed several times, it has finally come into full effect, and all states are now required to issue Real ID-compliant cards to their residents.

North Carolina is one of many states that have opted to participate in the Real ID program, which is administered by the Department of Homeland Security. To obtain a Real ID driver’s license, residents must provide additional documentation beyond what is required for a standard driver’s license. This includes proof of identity, such as a birth certificate or passport, proof of Social Security number, and proof of residency.

The new Real ID driver’s licenses will feature a gold star in the upper right-hand corner, indicating that the card is compliant with federal standards. This star is a visual indicator to transportation security officials that the card has met the necessary security requirements and can be used to board domestic flights and enter federal facilities where identification is required.

While the implementation of the Real ID program has been met with some resistance from privacy advocates and civil liberties groups, supporters argue that the enhanced security measures are necessary to protect against identity theft and fraud. By requiring additional documentation and verification of identity, the Real ID program aims to reduce the likelihood of individuals using fake or stolen identification to access secure facilities or board commercial flights.

North Carolina residents who choose to upgrade to a Real ID driver’s license will need to visit their local Department of Motor Vehicles office and present the necessary documentation. The cost of a Real ID-compliant card is the same as a standard driver’s license, but residents should be prepared to wait in line and provide the required paperwork to complete the process.

For those who do not wish to obtain a Real ID driver’s license, their standard driver’s licenses will still be valid for driving purposes within the state. However, these licenses will not be accepted as a form of identification for boarding domestic flights or entering federal facilities after the October 2021 deadline.

Overall, the introduction of the Real ID program in North Carolina represents a significant step forward in enhancing the security of state-issued identification cards. While the process of obtaining a Real ID-compliant card may require additional time and effort, the benefits of increased security and reduced risk of identity theft make it a worthwhile endeavor for residents who value the integrity of their personal information.

As North Carolina residents begin the process of upgrading their driver’s licenses to Real ID-compliant cards, it is important to stay informed about the requirements and deadlines associated with the program. By taking the necessary steps to obtain a Real ID driver’s license, residents can ensure that they are able to access secure facilities and travel by air without any issues.
