New Driver’s License Number Format Introduced in Arizona
Arizona residents will soon see a new format for driver’s license numbers, as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announced a change to increase security measures and protect against identity theft.
Starting on January 1st, 2023, all newly issued driver’s licenses in Arizona will feature a new format for driver’s license numbers. The new format will consist of a combination of letters and numbers, replacing the previous nine-digit numerical format that has been in place for many years.
The decision to implement the new format comes as part of ADOT’s ongoing efforts to enhance security and prevent identity theft. The new format is designed to make it more difficult for fraudsters to guess or generate fake driver’s license numbers, thus reducing the risk of identity theft.
“We are constantly exploring ways to improve the security of driver’s licenses and identification cards issued in Arizona,” said ADOT Director John Halikowski. “The new format for driver’s license numbers is just one of the many steps we are taking to protect our residents from identity theft and fraud.”
In addition to the new format for driver’s license numbers, ADOT is also introducing new security features on the physical driver’s licenses themselves. These new features include a holographic overlay, microprinting, and a raised tactile signature field, all of which are designed to make it easier for law enforcement officers and businesses to verify the authenticity of a driver’s license.
The new format for driver’s license numbers will apply to all newly issued driver’s licenses in Arizona, including renewals and replacements. Current driver’s licenses with the old numerical format will remain valid until their expiration date, at which point they will be replaced with a new license featuring the new format.
Residents who already have a driver’s license with the old numerical format do not need to take any action at this time. When it comes time to renew or replace their driver’s license, they will automatically receive a new license with the new format.
ADOT is also urging residents to be vigilant about protecting their personal information and to report any suspicious activity related to identity theft. Residents are encouraged to regularly monitor their credit reports, shred documents containing sensitive information, and be cautious when sharing personal information online.
