Pennsylvania Driver’s License Transition to Real ID

Starting October 1, 2020, Pennsylvanians will need a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card to board domestic flights or enter secure federal buildings. The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 in response to 9/11, with the aim of improving security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. Pennsylvania has been working towards compliance with the Real ID Act for several years, and now residents will soon be required to upgrade their current driver’s licenses to Real ID-compliant ones.

The transition to Real ID has been a long time coming for Pennsylvania, with the state facing several delays in implementing the new requirements. The initial deadline for compliance was in 2018, but the state was granted extensions by the Department of Homeland Security to give residents more time to obtain the new licenses. With the October 1, 2020 deadline fast approaching, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has been working diligently to ensure residents are aware of the new requirements and have the information they need to make the switch.

To obtain a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, residents will need to visit a PennDOT Driver’s License Center with specific documentation proving their identity, Social Security number, and Pennsylvania residency. Acceptable forms of identification include a valid U.S. passport, an original or certified copy of a birth certificate, and Social Security card. Residents will also need to provide proof of residency, such as a utility bill or lease agreement, and any name change documentation if applicable.

The process for obtaining a Real ID-compliant license is similar to applying for a standard driver’s license, but with additional documentation required. Once all necessary documents are submitted and verified, residents will receive a Real ID-compliant license with a gold star in the top right corner. This gold star signifies that the license meets federal Real ID standards and can be used for domestic air travel and access to secure federal facilities.

PennDOT has been offering informational events and outreach efforts to educate residents about the transition to Real ID and assist with the necessary documentation. These events have taken place at various locations across the state, providing residents with the opportunity to ask questions, learn more about the requirements, and start the process of obtaining a Real ID-compliant license. Additionally, PennDOT has been working closely with partner organizations and agencies to spread awareness about the new requirements and ensure all Pennsylvanians have the information they need to comply.

While the transition to Real ID may seem daunting for some residents, PennDOT assures that the process is straightforward and designed to ensure the security and safety of all individuals. By upgrading to a Real ID-compliant license, residents can have peace of mind knowing that their identification meets federal standards and can be used for official purposes. PennDOT encourages residents to start the process early and not wait until the last minute to obtain their Real ID, as the deadline is fast approaching.

In addition to the Real ID requirements, PennDOT also offers an optional enhanced driver’s license that can be used for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. This enhanced license includes all the benefits of a Real ID-compliant license, with the added convenience of international travel without needing a passport.

As the October 1, 2020 deadline approaches, Pennsylvanians are urged to take action and upgrade their current driver’s licenses to Real ID-compliant ones. By doing so, residents can ensure they have the proper identification to board domestic flights and enter secure federal buildings without any issues. For more information on the Real ID requirements and how to obtain a compliant license, residents can visit the PennDOT website or contact their local Driver’s License Center.

With the deadline for Real ID compliance looming, Pennsylvanians are encouraged to act now to avoid any potential disruptions in travel or access to federal facilities. The transition to Real ID is a necessary step towards enhanced security measures, and PennDOT is committed to assisting residents throughout the process. By obtaining a Real ID-compliant license, residents can have peace of mind knowing their identification meets federal standards and is valid for official use.
