New Jersey residents are being urged to get their driver’s licenses updated to comply with the federal Real ID requirements. As of October 1, 2021, the Real ID Act will go into full effect, meaning that residents will need a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card to board domestic flights, enter federal facilities, and access military bases.
The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, with the goal of improving security and preventing identity fraud. The Act establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards, including the use of enhanced security features and verification procedures.
To obtain a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card in New Jersey, residents will need to provide additional documentation beyond what is required for a standard license. This may include a certified copy of their birth certificate, a Social Security card, proof of New Jersey residency, and proof of legal name change (if applicable).
The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) has been working diligently to process Real ID applications and educate residents about the requirements. MVC Chief Administrator Sue Fulton states, “We want to ensure that every New Jerseyan is prepared for the upcoming deadline and has the necessary identification to travel and access federal facilities.”
To help streamline the process, the MVC has extended hours at select agencies and established a dedicated Real ID webpage with step-by-step instructions for applying. Residents are encouraged to make an appointment online to reduce wait times and ensure that they have all the necessary documents on hand.
Despite the outreach efforts, some New Jersey residents have expressed frustration with the Real ID application process. Long lines, confusion over required documents, and technical issues with the online appointment system have been reported at MVC agencies across the state.
One resident, Sarah Johnson, shared her experience of attempting to apply for a Real ID at her local MVC agency. “I waited in line for over two hours only to be told that I was missing a document. I had to come back another day with the correct paperwork, which was a major inconvenience.”
In response to these challenges, the MVC has increased staffing levels, provided additional training to employees, and implemented new technology to expedite the application process. Fulton acknowledges the difficulties some residents may be facing, stating, “We understand that this transition can be frustrating, and we are committed to making the process as smooth as possible for everyone.”
With the October 1 deadline quickly approaching, the MVC urges residents not to wait until the last minute to apply for a Real ID. Failure to obtain a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card will result in being unable to board domestic flights, enter federal facilities, or access military bases without alternative forms of identification.
For those who are unable to obtain a Real ID by the deadline, the MVC recommends applying for a United States passport or passport card as an alternative form of identification for air travel. However, it is important to note that a passport may not be accepted for entry to federal facilities or military bases.
