Kansas Department of Revenue Announces Changes to Driver’s License Renewal Process
In a move to streamline the driver’s license renewal process, the Kansas Department of Revenue has announced significant changes that will impact drivers across the state. The changes, which are set to take effect on January 1, 2022, will affect how drivers renew their licenses and will introduce new requirements aimed at enhancing security and reducing fraud.
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of a new online renewal option for Kansas driver’s licenses. This new option will allow eligible drivers to renew their licenses online without having to visit a driver’s license office in person. To be eligible for online renewal, drivers must meet certain criteria, including having a valid driver’s license that is not expired, suspended, or revoked, and having a current address on file with the Kansas Department of Revenue.
“We are excited to introduce this new online renewal option for Kansas driver’s licenses,” said Kansas Department of Revenue Secretary, Mark Burghart. “This will make the renewal process more convenient for drivers across the state and will help reduce wait times at driver’s license offices.”
In addition to the new online renewal option, the Kansas Department of Revenue is also introducing new requirements for driver’s license renewal. Starting in 2022, all drivers renewing their licenses will be required to provide proof of their Social Security number, either by providing their Social Security card or a document from the Social Security Administration showing their full Social Security number.
“We are implementing this new requirement to enhance security and reduce the risk of identity theft,” said Burghart. “By requiring all drivers to provide proof of their Social Security number, we can ensure that only legitimate individuals are able to renew their licenses.”
Drivers will also be required to provide proof of their Kansas residency when renewing their licenses. Acceptable forms of proof include a utility bill, bank statement, or lease agreement with the driver’s name and current address. This requirement is aimed at ensuring that drivers have a valid address on file with the Kansas Department of Revenue and helps prevent fraud and identity theft.
Additionally, the Kansas Department of Revenue is updating the design of Kansas driver’s licenses to incorporate new security features, such as holographic images and barcodes. These new features will help prevent counterfeiting and make it easier for law enforcement officers to verify the authenticity of driver’s licenses.
“We are committed to protecting the integrity of Kansas driver’s licenses and ensuring that only qualified individuals are able to obtain them,” said Burghart. “These new requirements and security features are part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the security of our licensing system and protect the identities of Kansas drivers.”
Drivers who are eligible for online renewal will receive a notification in the mail with instructions on how to renew their licenses online. Those who are not eligible for online renewal will need to visit a driver’s license office in person to renew their licenses.
