Delaware Introduces New Federal Driver’s License Option for Residents
Delaware residents will soon have the option to obtain a federal driver’s license, in addition to the traditional state-issued licenses currently available. The new federal license, which complies with the REAL ID Act, aims to provide residents with a more secure form of identification for travel and other purposes.
The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. These standards were developed in response to the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation to enhance the security of state-issued identification documents.
Beginning in October 2020, all travelers will be required to present a REAL ID-compliant form of identification in order to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities. This requirement has prompted many states, including Delaware, to offer federal driver’s licenses as an alternative to their traditional licenses.
The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) recently announced that residents will be able to apply for a federal driver’s license at select DMV locations starting next month. The federal license will feature a gold star in the upper right-hand corner, indicating that it is REAL ID-compliant.
To obtain a federal driver’s license, residents will need to provide documentation verifying their identity, date of birth, Social Security number, and address. These documents may include a birth certificate, Social Security card, and proof of residency, such as a utility bill or lease agreement.
In addition to the standard documentation requirements, applicants will also need to pass a vision test and have their photo taken at the DMV. The cost of a federal driver’s license will be the same as a traditional license, with fees ranging from $40 to $80 depending on the length of validity.
Delaware DMV Director Jennifer Cohan expressed support for the new federal license option, stating, “We are excited to offer residents the choice to obtain a federal driver’s license that complies with the REAL ID Act. This will provide added convenience and security for those who travel frequently or need access to federal facilities.”
Residents who do not wish to obtain a federal driver’s license can still apply for a traditional state-issued license. However, these licenses will not be accepted for federal purposes after the October 2020 deadline, unless accompanied by additional forms of identification.
Many Delaware residents are eager to take advantage of the new federal license option. Sarah Johnson, a Wilmington resident, shared her excitement, stating, “I travel frequently for work, so having a REAL ID-compliant license will make things much easier for me. I’m grateful that Delaware is offering this option to residents.”
As the deadline for REAL ID enforcement approaches, Delaware residents are encouraged to determine whether they need a federal driver’s license for travel or other purposes. The DMV will be providing additional information and assistance to help residents understand the requirements and obtain the necessary documentation.
Overall, the introduction of the federal driver’s license option in Delaware represents a significant step towards enhancing security and convenience for residents. By offering a REAL ID-compliant form of identification, the state is ensuring that residents can easily access federal facilities and travel domestically without interruption.
