Ohio to Introduce New Driver’s License Design to Enhance Security Measures

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) has announced plans to roll out a new design for driver’s licenses across the state in an effort to enhance security measures and combat fraud.

The new driver’s license design will feature several advanced security features, including a polycarbonate material that is more durable and tamper-resistant than the current plastic cards. The card will also include a laser-engraved ghost image of the driver’s photo, as well as raised printing and micro-printing to deter counterfeiting.

In addition to these physical security features, the new driver’s licenses will also include a barcode that can be scanned to verify the authenticity of the card and the identity of the driver. This barcode will allow law enforcement officers and other officials to quickly access important information about the driver, such as their driving record and any past traffic violations.

“This new driver’s license design represents a significant step forward in our efforts to enhance the security of Ohio’s roads and ensure that only qualified and authorized individuals are behind the wheel,” said Ohio BMV Director Sarah Smith. “By incorporating these advanced security features, we are making it harder for criminals to produce fake IDs and commit fraud.”

The rollout of the new driver’s license design is expected to begin in early 2022, with existing licenses being replaced as they expire. The BMV is working closely with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition to the new cards and educate Ohio residents about the changes.

In addition to the new driver’s license design, the BMV is also updating its online services to make it easier for Ohio residents to renew their licenses and access other BMV services. The agency is expanding its online appointment scheduling system and adding new features to its mobile app to streamline the process of obtaining a driver’s license.

“We are committed to providing Ohio residents with the tools and resources they need to easily and securely access BMV services,” said Smith. “By updating our online services and implementing a new driver’s license design, we are making it simpler and more convenient for people to comply with state regulations and stay safe on the road.”

The introduction of the new driver’s license design comes as part of a broader effort by the Ohio BMV to modernize its operations and improve customer service. The agency has been working to upgrade its technology infrastructure and streamline its processes to reduce wait times and enhance the overall customer experience.

“We are always looking for ways to better serve the residents of Ohio and make it easier for them to interact with the BMV,” said Smith. “The introduction of the new driver’s license design is just one example of how we are leveraging technology and innovation to enhance security and convenience for our customers.”

Overall, the new driver’s license design represents a significant upgrade to the current system and will provide Ohio residents with a more secure and reliable form of identification. With its advanced security features and modern design, the new driver’s license is poised to become a key tool in the fight against fraud and ensure the safety of Ohio’s roads for years to come.
