California Announces Increase in Driver’s License Fees
Sacramento, CA – Californians will soon be paying more for driver’s licenses as the state has announced an increase in fees for obtaining or renewing a driver’s license. The fee increase, which was approved by the California legislature, is part of an effort to generate additional revenue for the state’s transportation infrastructure projects.
Starting next month, the fee for obtaining a new driver’s license in California will increase from $35 to $50. The fee for renewing a driver’s license will also increase, from $40 to $55. These fee increases are expected to generate an additional $500 million in revenue for the state over the next five years.
According to Governor Gavin Newsom, the fee increase is necessary to fund much-needed transportation projects across the state. “Our roads and bridges are in desperate need of repair, and we simply do not have enough funding to address these critical infrastructure needs,” said Governor Newsom in a statement. “By increasing the fees for driver’s licenses, we can generate the revenue needed to make these necessary improvements.”
