Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Announces Changes to Driver’s License Requirements
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has recently announced changes to the state’s driver’s license requirements, aimed at improving safety on the roads and providing more convenience for drivers. These changes, which go into effect on January 1, 2022, will impact both new drivers applying for their first license and existing drivers renewing their licenses.
One of the most significant changes is the implementation of a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program for new drivers. Under the GDL program, new drivers will be required to complete three stages before obtaining a full driver’s license. The first stage, known as the learner’s permit stage, will require new drivers to complete a driver education course and pass a written test before they can practice driving with a licensed adult in the vehicle.
After holding a learner’s permit for a certain period, new drivers will move on to the second stage, the intermediate license stage. During this stage, new drivers will be allowed to drive unsupervised but with restrictions, such as a curfew and limits on the number of passengers in the vehicle. New drivers will need to complete a certain number of hours of supervised driving before progressing to the final stage, the full driver’s license stage.
Existing drivers renewing their licenses will also face changes, as the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has introduced new requirements for license renewal. In addition to passing a vision test and updating their personal information, drivers will now be required to complete a driver safety course every five years. This course will cover topics such as defensive driving, distracted driving, and impaired driving, with the goal of keeping drivers up-to-date on the latest safety practices.

In addition, CDL holders will be required to undergo regular medical examinations to ensure that they are fit to operate commercial vehicles safely.
