New Jersey Passes Bill Allowing Driver Licenses for Undocumented Immigrants
In a landmark decision, New Jersey has become the fourteenth state in the United States to allow undocumented immigrants to obtain driver licenses. The controversial bill passed with a narrow margin in the state legislature, sparking debates and protests from both sides of the political spectrum.
Proponents of the bill argue that allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driver licenses will make New Jersey roads safer by ensuring that all drivers are properly trained and insured. They also believe that this measure will help integrate undocumented immigrants into society and boost the state’s economy.
“We believe that everyone who drives on our roads should be trained, tested, and insured,” said Governor Phil Murphy, who signed the bill into law. “This measure will make our roads safer for all residents of New Jersey.”
Opponents of the bill, however, argue that it rewards illegal behavior and encourages more undocumented immigrants to come to the state. They fear that allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driver licenses will lead to voter fraud and other forms of identity theft.
“This bill sends the wrong message to those who come to our country illegally,” said State Senator Ron Johnson, a vocal opponent of the measure. “We should be enforcing our immigration laws, not rewarding those who break them.”
To address these concerns, the new law includes several safeguards to prevent voter fraud and identity theft. Undocumented immigrants who apply for driver licenses will be issued special licenses that cannot be used for federal purposes, such as boarding a plane or entering a federal building. They will also have to undergo background checks and provide proof of residency in New Jersey.

The new law is set to go into effect on January 1, 2022. Undocumented immigrants who wish to obtain driver licenses will be able to apply at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission offices. They will have to pass a written test, a vision test, and a road test, just like any other driver.
