Maryland Drivers Can Now Add Their Driver’s License to Apple Wallet
In a move that will make life easier for millions of Maryland drivers, the state has announced that residents can now add their driver’s license to their Apple Wallet. This new feature allows users to access their driver’s license digitally, making it more convenient and secure to present when needed.
The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) worked closely with Apple to make this feature available to residents. By adding their driver’s license to their Apple Wallet, users can now easily access their identification on their iPhone or Apple Watch, reducing the need to carry around a physical card.
“We are thrilled to offer Maryland drivers the option to add their driver’s license to their Apple Wallet,” said Chrissy Nizer, MDOT MVA Administrator. “This new feature will make it more convenient for residents to access their identification and will provide an added layer of security.”
To add their driver’s license to Apple Wallet, Maryland residents simply need to scan their physical card using their iPhone’s camera. The digital license will include all the same information as the physical card, including the driver’s name, date of birth, photo, and expiration date.
In addition to being more convenient, the digital driver’s license is also more secure. The information in Apple Wallet is encrypted and protected by Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode, adding an extra layer of security to the identification.
Maryland joins a growing number of states that have made their driver’s licenses available in Apple Wallet. Other states that have adopted this feature include Arizona, Georgia, Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, and Oklahoma.
“We are excited to see more states embracing digital driver’s licenses,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. “By working together with state governments, we can make it easier for people to access their identification and streamline the identification process.”
The move to digital driver’s licenses is part of a larger trend towards digital identification. More and more people are using apps and digital wallets to store their important information, from credit cards to boarding passes to event tickets.
While the digital driver’s license is a convenient option for many, residents will still have the choice to carry around their physical card if they prefer. The digital driver’s license does not replace the physical card but simply provides an alternative way to access the information.
For Maryland residents who are interested in adding their driver’s license to Apple Wallet, they can visit the MDOT MVA website for more information and instructions on how to complete the process. The feature is available to all Maryland drivers with an iPhone running iOS 15 or later.
Overall, the introduction of the digital driver’s license in Apple Wallet is a positive step towards streamlining identification processes and making life easier for residents. With the ability to access their driver’s license digitally, Maryland drivers can now enjoy added convenience and security when presenting their identification.
