Washington State to Offer Enhanced Driver’s Licenses for Easy Border Crossings
In an effort to make cross-border travel easier and more secure, Washington State is now offering enhanced driver’s licenses to its residents. These enhanced licenses comply with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) and can be used in place of a passport for border crossings between the United States and Canada.
The enhanced driver’s license was created to streamline the process for frequent travelers who need to cross the border regularly for work or leisure. By simply showing their enhanced driver’s license, travelers can bypass the need for a passport and save time at border crossings.
“We are thrilled to offer this convenient option to our residents,” said Washington State Governor, Jay Inslee. “The enhanced driver’s license not only makes travel easier but also enhances security by ensuring that only authorized individuals are crossing the border.”
To apply for an enhanced driver’s license in Washington State, residents must visit their local Department of Licensing office and provide proof of identity, residency, and citizenship. The cost of an enhanced driver’s license is slightly higher than a standard driver’s license, but many travelers find the convenience and peace of mind well worth the investment.
“We have seen a steady increase in the number of residents applying for enhanced driver’s licenses since they were first introduced,” said Maria Martinez, spokesperson for the Washington State Department of Licensing. “Many travelers appreciate the ease and efficiency of using their enhanced license to cross the border.”
Residents who already hold a valid U.S. passport or passport card are not required to apply for an enhanced driver’s license, as these documents already comply with the WHTI requirements. However, for those who prefer the convenience of having their travel documents and driver’s license in one, the enhanced driver’s license is a popular choice.
In addition to being valid for border crossings between the U.S. and Canada, the enhanced driver’s license can also be used for domestic air travel and access to federal facilities. This multifunctional license provides a hassle-free solution for travelers who need to carry multiple forms of identification.
“We are constantly looking for ways to improve the travel experience for our residents,” said Governor Inslee. “The enhanced driver’s license is just one example of how we are working to make travel more convenient and secure for everyone.”
Washington State residents who are interested in applying for an enhanced driver’s license can visit the Department of Licensing website for more information on the application process and required documents. With the option to streamline their travel experience and enjoy the benefits of a secure form of identification, the enhanced driver’s license is a popular choice for frequent travelers in Washington State.
