Arkansas Department of Transportation Announces Changes to Driver’s License Process
In a move aimed at streamlining the process and improving customer service, the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) has announced several changes to the driver’s license application and renewal process. The changes, which were approved by the Arkansas State Legislature, are set to go into effect on January 1st, 2022.
One of the key changes is the introduction of a new online application system, which will allow individuals to apply for a driver’s license or identification card from the comfort of their own homes. The online system will also enable applicants to schedule appointments at their local ARDOT office for in-person services, such as taking a vision test or having a new photo taken.

Another change to the driver’s license process is the elimination of the requirement for new residents to take a written knowledge test when applying for an Arkansas driver’s license. Previously, individuals moving to Arkansas from another state were required to take a written test covering the state’s traffic laws and regulations. Under the new system, out-of-state residents can simply transfer their existing driver’s license to Arkansas without having to take the test.
“We understand that moving to a new state can be a stressful experience, and we want to make the transition as smooth as possible for new residents,” said Smith. “By eliminating the written test requirement, we are hoping to make the process of getting an Arkansas driver’s license less burdensome for those who are new to the state.”
In addition to these changes, ARDOT is also introducing a new system for managing appointments at its driver services offices. Under the new system, individuals will be able to schedule appointments online or by phone, rather than having to wait in line for service. This change is intended to reduce wait times and ensure that customers can receive timely assistance when they visit an ARDOT office.
“We know that people lead busy lives, and waiting in line at the DMV is not a productive use of their time,” said Smith. “By introducing an appointment system, we are hoping to make the process of visiting our offices more efficient and customer-friendly.”
