Arkansas driver’s license holders may soon see changes in the process for obtaining a real ID, as the state moves towards compliance with federal regulations. The Real ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, requires states to issue more secure forms of identification that meet federal standards for travel and access to federal facilities.
Arkansas began issuing Real IDs in 2010, but many residents have not yet upgraded their licenses to meet the new requirements. To address this issue, the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) has launched a campaign to encourage residents to obtain Real IDs before the October 1, 2020 deadline.
“We want to make sure that all Arkansans have the necessary identification to fly domestically or enter federal facilities after the deadline,” said DFA spokesperson, Jessica Johnson. “It’s important for everyone to be prepared and have their Real ID in hand before October 1.”
To obtain a Real ID in Arkansas, residents must visit a local DFA office with a valid birth certificate or passport, social security card, and two proofs of residency. The process also requires applicants to provide documentation of any name changes, such as marriage certificates or court orders. The cost of a Real ID in Arkansas is $40, the same as a standard driver’s license.
“We understand that gathering the necessary documents can be a hassle for some people, but it’s a small price to pay for the added security and convenience of a Real ID,” Johnson explained. “We’re here to help guide residents through the process and make it as smooth as possible.”
In addition to the new requirements for Real IDs, Arkansas is also implementing changes to the design of driver’s licenses to enhance security and prevent fraud. The new licenses will feature a raised security seal, holographic images, and UV ink to deter counterfeiting.
“We want to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to protecting our residents’ personal information,” said Johnson. “The new licenses are harder to replicate and will provide an extra layer of security for everyone.”
Arkansas residents who do not have a Real ID by the October 1 deadline will still be able to use their standard driver’s license for driving and identification purposes within the state. However, they will need a passport or other approved form of ID for domestic air travel and access to federal facilities.
“We want to make sure that everyone is aware of the upcoming deadline and has the information they need to upgrade to a Real ID if necessary,” Johnson emphasized. “We don’t want anyone to be caught off guard and unable to travel or access federal buildings after October 1.”
For more information on obtaining a Real ID in Arkansas, residents can visit the DFA website or contact their local office for assistance. The department is also offering informational sessions and outreach events to help educate the public about the new requirements and how to comply.
“We’re committed to making this transition as easy as possible for everyone,” Johnson said. “We’re here to answer any questions and provide the support needed to ensure that all Arkansans have the identification they need for travel and security in the future.”
As the October 1 deadline approaches, Arkansas residents are encouraged to take action now to obtain their Real ID and avoid any potential disruptions in their travel plans or access to federal facilities. By following the guidelines and submitting the necessary documentation, residents can ensure that they are prepared for the changes ahead and have peace of mind knowing they have a secure form of identification.
