California Introduces New Feature on Driver’s Licenses to Combat Identity Theft
In an effort to strengthen security measures and combat identity theft, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced a new feature on the back of driver’s licenses. Starting this month, all newly issued licenses will include a unique identification number on the back of the card, making it easier for law enforcement agencies and businesses to verify the authenticity of the document.
The move comes in response to the increasing prevalence of identity theft in the state. According to the Federal Trade Commission, California ranks among the top states for identity theft complaints, with over 50,000 reported cases in 2020 alone. Many of these cases involve the fraudulent use of stolen driver’s licenses to open bank accounts, apply for credit cards, or even commit crimes.
The new identification number, located on the back of the driver’s license, is part of a larger effort by the DMV to enhance document security and reduce the risk of identity theft. The number will be unique to each individual license holder and will be linked to the DMV’s database, allowing authorities to quickly verify the authenticity of the document.
