New Mexico Driver’s License Now Accepted for Domestic Flights
Starting November 2020, travelers in New Mexico can rejoice as they are now able to use their state-issued driver’s license to board domestic flights. The decision comes as a relief for many residents who were previously unable to use their New Mexico driver’s license as a form of identification at airports.
The Real ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, established new security standards for state-issued identification cards to enhance national security and prevent identity theft. As a result, many states, including New Mexico, were required to make changes to their driver’s licenses and identification cards to comply with the new regulations.

The new Real ID-compliant driver’s licenses will feature enhanced security features, such as a star in the upper right-hand corner, to indicate that the card meets the federal requirements. Travelers can rest assured that their personal information is protected and secure when using their New Mexico driver’s license to board flights.
In addition to domestic flights, the Real ID-compliant driver’s licenses will also be accepted at federal facilities, such as military bases and nuclear power plants. The Motor Vehicle Division is working diligently to inform residents about the changes to the driver’s license requirements and how they can obtain a Real ID-compliant card. Residents are encouraged to visit their local MVD office to apply for a new driver’s license or upgrade their existing license to meet the new standards.
Travelers who already have a valid passport or other acceptable form of identification are not required to obtain a Real ID-compliant driver’s license.
