Illinois Residents Prepare for Change in Driver’s License Process

Illinois residents are gearing up for a major change in the process for obtaining or renewing their driver’s licenses. Starting next month, the state will transition to a new system for issuing licenses and identification cards, known as REAL ID. This change is part of a nationwide initiative to enhance the security and integrity of state-issued identification documents.

The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards, with the goal of preventing terrorism and reducing identity fraud. Illinois is one of the last states to comply with the requirements of the REAL ID Act, with the deadline for implementation set for October 1, 2020.

Under the new system, Illinois residents will need to provide additional documentation to prove their identity, residency, and legal presence in the United States. This includes documents such as a valid passport, birth certificate, Social Security card, and proof of residency. The Illinois Secretary of State’s office has been working to educate the public about the new requirements and what they need to bring with them when they apply for a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID card.

“Illinois residents need to be aware of the upcoming changes to the driver’s license process,” said Secretary of State Jesse White. “It’s important to start gathering the necessary documents now, so you’re ready when it’s time to renew your license. We want to make sure everyone is prepared and can smoothly transition to the new system.”

The transition to REAL ID has been met with some confusion and concern among Illinois residents. Many are unsure about what documents they need to bring or where to go to get a REAL ID-compliant license. Some are worried about the potential for long lines and wait times at driver services facilities, especially as the October 1 deadline approaches.

“I’ve heard a lot of people talking about the new REAL ID requirements, and there seems to be a lot of uncertainty about what exactly is needed,” said Sarah Johnson, a Chicago resident. “I want to make sure I have everything in order before I go to renew my license, but it’s hard to find clear information on what I need to bring.”

To help alleviate some of these concerns, the Secretary of State’s office has launched an online tool called the “REAL ID Wizard,” which guides residents through the process of determining what documents they need to bring to apply for a REAL ID-compliant license. The Wizard asks a series of questions about the applicant’s age, citizenship status, and residency, and then generates a personalized checklist of required documents.

In addition to the online tool, the Secretary of State’s office is also holding information sessions at driver services facilities across the state to educate residents about the REAL ID requirements and answer any questions they may have. The goal is to make the transition to the new system as smooth and stress-free as possible for Illinois residents.

“I appreciate that the Secretary of State’s office is taking steps to inform the public about the changes to the driver’s license process,” said Johnson. “It definitely helps to have access to resources like the REAL ID Wizard and information sessions to make sure I have everything I need when I go to renew my license.”

As the deadline for compliance with the REAL ID Act approaches, Illinois residents are encouraged to start preparing now for the transition to the new system. By gathering the necessary documents and staying informed about the requirements, residents can ensure a seamless experience when it’s time to renew their driver’s licenses or apply for a REAL ID-compliant card.

“I know change can be daunting, but we are committed to making this transition as smooth as possible for Illinois residents,” said Secretary of State White. “We are here to help answer any questions and provide the resources needed to ensure everyone can obtain a REAL ID-compliant license or ID card. Let’s work together to make sure Illinois is in compliance with the REAL ID Act and enhance the security of our state-issued identification documents.”
