Idaho to Introduce New Class D Driver’s License
BOISE, Idaho – The Idaho Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced that a new Class D driver’s license will be introduced in the state, starting next month. The decision to implement this new license class comes after a thorough review of the current licensing system and feedback from stakeholders. The Class D driver’s license is aimed at simplifying the licensing process and providing more flexibility for drivers.
The Class D driver’s license will replace the current Class C license, which is the standard license issued to drivers in Idaho. The new license will offer the same privileges as the Class C license, allowing holders to operate non-commercial vehicles weighing less than 26,000 pounds. This includes passenger cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs.
One of the key changes with the introduction of the Class D license is the removal of the need for a separate endorsement for motorcycles. Under the current system, drivers who wish to operate a motorcycle must obtain a separate endorsement on their license. With the Class D license, drivers will automatically be permitted to operate motorcycles, provided they meet the necessary requirements.
“We believe that the introduction of the Class D driver’s license will make the licensing process more straightforward and convenient for drivers in Idaho,” said Sarah Johnson, spokesperson for the IDOT. “By consolidating the licensing requirements and removing the need for separate endorsements, we hope to streamline the process and make it easier for drivers to obtain the necessary credentials.”
In addition to simplifying the licensing process, the Class D driver’s license will also offer greater flexibility for drivers. Holders of the new license will have the option to choose between a standard license or a Real ID-compliant license. The Real ID-compliant license is designed to meet federal security standards and will be required for air travel and entry into federal facilities starting in October 2021.
“Offering drivers the choice between a standard license and a Real ID-compliant license is part of our commitment to providing options that meet the needs of all drivers,” Johnson explained. “We understand that some drivers may not require a Real ID-compliant license, so we wanted to give them the flexibility to choose the type of license that best suits their needs.”
The introduction of the Class D driver’s license is part of a broader effort by the IDOT to modernize the state’s licensing system and improve services for drivers. In recent years, the department has implemented a number of initiatives to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the licensing process. This includes the introduction of online renewal services, expanded appointment options, and increased accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
“We are constantly looking for ways to improve our services and make the licensing process as seamless as possible for drivers,” Johnson said. “The introduction of the Class D driver’s license is just one example of our ongoing efforts to modernize and enhance the services we offer to the residents of Idaho.”
The new Class D driver’s license will be available to Idaho residents starting on March 1, 2022. Current Class C license holders will have the option to renew their license as a Class D license when it expires. More information about the new license class, including eligibility requirements and application procedures, will be provided on the IDOT website in the coming weeks.
Overall, the introduction of the Class D driver’s license in Idaho represents a positive step forward in simplifying the licensing process and offering greater flexibility for drivers. By consolidating licensing requirements and providing options for both standard and Real ID-compliant licenses, the IDOT is working to ensure that all drivers have access to the credentials they need to operate vehicles safely and legally in the state.
