Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles Unveils New Driver’s License Design
DENVER- The Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles has revealed a new design for the state’s driver’s licenses, aimed at enhancing security features and modernizing the overall look of the cards. The new design will be gradually rolled out over the next few months, with all Colorado residents receiving the updated licenses by the end of the year.
The new design features a vibrant color palette, with a bold Colorado state flag motif running across the top of the card. The cardholder’s photograph is displayed prominently in the center, with a holographic overlay that provides an added layer of security against counterfeiting. Additionally, the card includes a new laser-engraved “Colorado” logo, which is visible when held up to the light.
“We are excited to unveil this new design for Colorado’s driver’s licenses,” said DMV spokesperson, Lisa Martinez. “Not only does it feature enhanced security features to protect against fraud, but it also reflects the unique spirit of our state with its striking visuals.”
One of the most notable changes to the new design is the inclusion of a prominent “REAL ID” designation in the top right corner of the card. This designation signifies that the card meets federal security standards established by the REAL ID Act, which was passed by Congress in 2005 in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Starting in October 2023, all U.S. residents will need a REAL ID-compliant license to board domestic flights and access federal buildings.
“We want to ensure that all Colorado residents are aware of the REAL ID requirements and are prepared for the upcoming deadline,” Martinez explained. “By including the REAL ID designation on our new driver’s licenses, we hope to make the transition process as smooth as possible for our residents.”
In addition to the new design, the DMV is also implementing a number of new security measures to further protect against identity theft and fraud. These measures include enhanced facial recognition technology, biometric data encryption, and updated verification processes for driver’s license applications.
“We take the security of our residents’ personal information very seriously,” Martinez emphasized. “The new security measures we are implementing with this new design will help to safeguard against identity theft and ensure that only legitimate applicants receive a Colorado driver’s license.”
As part of the rollout of the new design, all Colorado residents will be required to renew their driver’s licenses in person at a DMV office. This is a standard practice to ensure that the DMV has the most up-to-date information and identification on file for each cardholder. Residents will be provided with information on how to schedule an appointment for their renewal and what documents to bring with them to verify their identity.
“We understand that renewing your driver’s license in person can be an inconvenience, but it is a necessary step to ensure the security and integrity of our licensing system,” Martinez said. “We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of all Colorado residents as we work to implement this new design and enhance our security measures.”
