Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles Introduces Enhanced Driver’s License for Secure Travel
In an effort to enhance security measures and streamline the identification process for travelers, the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced the introduction of the Colorado Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL). This new form of identification will provide an added layer of security for residents who wish to use it for domestic air travel or to enter federal facilities.
The Colorado EDL is a state-issued driver’s license that has been enhanced with additional security features to meet the requirements of the REAL ID Act. This federal law, passed in 2005 in response to the September 11th terrorist attacks, established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.
“We are proud to offer this new option to Colorado residents,” said DMV spokesperson Sarah Johnson. “The Colorado Enhanced Driver’s License is an important step towards enhancing security and protecting the privacy of our residents when they travel or access federal facilities.”
To obtain a Colorado EDL, applicants must visit a DMV office in person and provide documentation to prove their identity, lawful presence in the United States, Social Security number, and Colorado residency. This documentation may include a passport, birth certificate, Social Security card, and proof of residency such as a utility bill or lease agreement.
In addition to the standard documentation requirements, applicants for the Colorado EDL must also undergo a background check and have their photo taken with facial recognition technology. This information will be securely stored in a database to prevent identity theft and fraudulent use of the license.
Once approved, the Colorado EDL will feature a gold star in the upper right corner to indicate that it meets the REAL ID Act requirements. This will allow residents to use the license for domestic air travel, entry into secure federal facilities, and other activities where REAL ID-compliant identification is required.
“We want to make sure that Colorado residents have access to secure and reliable forms of identification,” said Johnson. “The Colorado Enhanced Driver’s License is a convenient option for those who need to travel or access federal facilities without the need for a separate form of identification.”
While the Colorado EDL offers added security benefits, it is important to note that it is not mandatory for residents to obtain one. Standard Colorado driver’s licenses and identification cards will continue to be valid for driving and non-federal purposes.
“We encourage residents to consider obtaining a Colorado Enhanced Driver’s License if they plan to travel or visit federal facilities in the future,” said Johnson. “It provides an added layer of security and peace of mind when it comes to identification.”
The Colorado DMV has begun accepting applications for the Colorado Enhanced Driver’s License at select offices across the state. Residents can visit the DMV website for more information on the application process, required documentation, and locations where the EDL is available.
“We are excited to offer this new option to Colorado residents and look forward to helping them obtain the enhanced identification they need for secure travel,” said Johnson. “The Colorado Enhanced Driver’s License is a valuable tool for residents who want to protect their identity and comply with federal security requirements.”
