Connecticut to Introduce New Digital Driver’s License Program

Connecticut residents will soon have the option to ditch their traditional plastic driver’s licenses in favor of a more convenient and secure digital version. The state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced plans to launch a new digital driver’s license program that will allow drivers to access their license through a mobile app on their smartphones.

The new digital driver’s licenses are part of a broader effort by the DMV to modernize its services and provide residents with more convenient and secure options for accessing their personal identification. This move comes as the state looks to keep up with the growing trend of digital identification and reduce the use of physical cards that can be lost or stolen.

“We are excited to introduce this new digital driver’s license program, which will provide our residents with a more secure and convenient way to access their identification,” said DMV Commissioner, Sibongile Magubane. “This program is part of our ongoing efforts to modernize our services and provide residents with the options they need to access their information in a way that works best for them.”

The digital driver’s license program will be available to all Connecticut residents who hold a valid driver’s license. To participate, residents will need to download the state’s DMV mobile app, which will allow them to access their digital license and use it as a form of identification.

The digital driver’s license will include all the same information as a traditional license, including the driver’s name, date of birth, address, license number, and expiration date. The digital license will also feature a QR code that can be scanned by businesses and organizations to verify the holder’s identity.

In addition to providing a more convenient way for residents to access their identification, the digital driver’s license program also offers several security benefits. The digital license can be locked with a PIN or biometric authentication, making it more secure than a traditional physical card that can be easily duplicated.

The digital driver’s license program is set to launch in early 2023, with a pilot program scheduled to begin in select areas later this year. Residents who are interested in participating in the pilot program can sign up on the DMV’s website to receive updates and information on how to get started.

“We are committed to ensuring that our residents have access to secure and convenient identification options, and the digital driver’s license program is a major step in that direction,” said Magubane. “We encourage all Connecticut residents to consider participating in the pilot program and help us shape the future of identification in our state.”

As the digital driver’s license program begins to roll out, the DMV will continue to offer traditional physical licenses to residents who prefer that option. The digital license will serve as an additional choice for those who want a more modern and convenient way to access their identification.

Overall, the introduction of the digital driver’s license program is a positive step forward for Connecticut residents, offering a more secure and convenient option for accessing their identification. With the launch of this program, the state’s DMV is embracing technology and innovation to better serve its residents and keep up with the changing landscape of identification.
