The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) recently announced the launch of a new initiative aimed at increasing accessibility and inclusivity for Spanish-speaking residents in the state. Beginning next month, individuals seeking to obtain a driver’s license will have the option to take the written exam in Spanish, in addition to English.
This move comes in response to the growing population of Spanish-speaking individuals in Georgia, many of whom face barriers to obtaining a driver’s license due to language constraints. According to Census data, the Hispanic population in the state has increased by over 120% in the past decade, making up nearly 10% of the overall population.
“By offering the driver license test in Spanish, we are working to create a more equitable and inclusive process for all residents of Georgia,” said Commissioner Spencer R. Moore. “We want to ensure that language is not a barrier to accessing essential services such as obtaining a driver’s license.”
The new initiative will allow individuals to choose between taking the written exam in English or Spanish when applying for a driver’s license. The exam will cover topics such as road signs, traffic laws, and safe driving practices, and will be available in both languages at DDS locations across the state.
In addition to the written exam, DDS is also working to provide other resources and support for Spanish-speaking individuals seeking to obtain a driver’s license. This includes the availability of study materials, practice tests, and informational resources in Spanish, as well as the option to request an interpreter for the road skills test if needed.
“We are committed to making the process of obtaining a driver’s license as accessible and straightforward as possible for all residents of Georgia,” said Commissioner Moore. “By offering the driver license test in Spanish, we hope to remove one of the barriers that may prevent individuals from obtaining this important form of identification.”
The decision to offer the driver license test in Spanish has been met with widespread support from advocacy groups and community organizations. Many believe that this move will not only make it easier for Spanish-speaking residents to obtain a driver’s license but also contribute to safer roads and communities overall.
