California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a landmark bill into law today that will allow undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses in the state. The bill, known as AB 60, was introduced by Assemblyman Luis Alejo and has been highly controversial, with passionate arguments on both sides of the debate.
The passing of this bill marks a significant victory for immigrant rights advocates who have long fought for the ability for undocumented immigrants to legally drive in California. Currently, California is home to an estimated 2.2 million undocumented immigrants, many of whom rely on driving as their primary means of transportation.
Governor Newsom, who has been a vocal supporter of immigrant rights, spoke at the bill signing ceremony, stating, “Today, California is sending a clear message that we stand with our undocumented brothers and sisters. This bill is about ensuring that all Californians, regardless of their immigration status, have access to the basic necessity of a driver’s license.”
Under the new law, undocumented immigrants will be required to provide proof of identity and California residency, as well as pass a written and driving test in order to obtain a driver’s license. The licenses will be marked with a distinctive symbol to indicate that they are for undocumented immigrants, in order to prevent any confusion or misunderstanding by law enforcement.
Opponents of the bill argue that it will encourage illegal immigration and undermine public safety. They fear that granting driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants will make it easier for them to remain in the country illegally and will lead to increased crime rates. However, supporters of the bill argue that it will make California roads safer by ensuring that all drivers on the road are properly licensed and insured.
In addition to allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses, AB 60 also includes provisions for the DMV to implement new training programs for employees to help them better assist undocumented immigrants applying for licenses. The bill also includes protections to prevent the DMV from sharing information with immigration authorities.
The passing of AB 60 represents a significant step forward in the fight for immigrant rights in California. While there are still many challenges ahead, this bill is a crucial victory for the millions of undocumented immigrants who call California home. Governor Newsom’s signing of the bill is a clear signal that California remains committed to protecting and supporting all of its residents, regardless of their immigration status.
