Title: New Jersey Residents Encouraged to Get New Driver’s License Ahead of Deadline
As the deadline for REAL ID compliance approaches, residents in New Jersey are being encouraged to renew their driver’s licenses and obtain the new federally-approved identification. The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 in response to the September 11th terrorist attacks, with the aim of establishing minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.
Beginning on October 1, 2021, residents will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state-issued identification card to board commercial flights, enter federal facilities, or access nuclear power plants. Without a compliant ID, individuals will be required to present an alternative form of identification such as a passport or military ID.
“Obtaining a REAL ID is essential for New Jersey residents who frequently travel by plane or need access to federal facilities,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “We want to make sure that everyone is prepared for the upcoming deadline and encouraged to renew their driver’s license as soon as possible.”
To obtain a REAL ID, residents must visit a New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) office in person and present specific documentation to prove their identity, Social Security number, and New Jersey residency. Some examples of acceptable documents include a U.S. birth certificate, Social Security card, and two proofs of address such as a utility bill or rental agreement.
“We understand that obtaining a REAL ID may be an inconvenience for some individuals, but it is important for the safety and security of all Americans,” said MVC Chief Administrator Sue Fulton. “We are working diligently to ensure that the process is as smooth and efficient as possible for our residents.”
The MVC has implemented several measures to alleviate long wait times and accommodate the increased demand for REAL IDs. Residents are encouraged to schedule an appointment online before visiting a local MVC office, as walk-in services may have limited availability. Additionally, certain documents can be pre-verified through the MVC’s website to expedite the application process.
“I was able to renew my driver’s license and get a REAL ID in just under an hour,” said New Jersey resident Sarah Johnson. “The MVC staff were helpful and efficient, and I’m glad that I have my new identification card well in advance of the deadline.”
For residents who are unable to visit an MVC office in person, the agency offers a mail-in option for REAL ID renewals. Individuals can request a REAL ID renewal form by mail and submit the required documentation for review. Once approved, the new driver’s license will be mailed to the applicant’s address within a few weeks.
“We want to make the REAL ID application process as convenient as possible for all residents,” said Fulton. “Whether you prefer to visit in person or renew by mail, we are here to assist you every step of the way.”
In addition to the REAL ID deadline, New Jersey residents are also encouraged to renew their driver’s licenses promptly to avoid any potential penalties or fines. The MVC offers several renewal options, including online renewal for eligible individuals with no changes to their information, as well as in-person renewal for those who require an updated photo or address change.
“We want to remind residents that it is important to renew your driver’s license on time to maintain your driving privileges in New Jersey,” said Governor Murphy. “The MVC is here to help you with any questions or concerns you may have about the renewal process.”
As the deadline for REAL ID compliance draws near, New Jersey residents are urged to take action and obtain their new driver’s licenses as soon as possible. By doing so, individuals can ensure that they have the necessary identification to travel by plane, access federal facilities, and comply with the requirements of the REAL ID Act.
“We want to make sure that all New Jersey residents are prepared for the upcoming deadline and have the necessary identification to meet federal standards,” said Governor Murphy. “By renewing your driver’s license and obtaining a REAL ID, you can ensure that you are ready for any travel or government-related activities that may require compliant identification.”
For more information about the REAL ID Act and how to obtain a new driver’s license in New Jersey, residents are encouraged to visit the MVC’s website or contact their local MVC office for assistance. With the October 1 deadline approaching, now is the time for residents to take action and secure their new identification for future travel and official purposes.
