Illinois Launches Enhanced Driver’s License Program
Illinois residents can now apply for an enhanced driver’s license (EDL) that allows them to travel to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean without needing a passport. The new program, launched by the Illinois Secretary of State’s office, aims to provide residents with a more convenient and secure form of identification for international travel.
The enhanced driver’s license features a chip that contains personal information such as the holder’s name, date of birth, and citizenship status. This information is encrypted and can only be accessed by authorized personnel. The EDL also includes a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip that allows border patrol agents to quickly verify the holder’s identity and citizenship status.
To apply for an enhanced driver’s license, residents must visit a Secretary of State facility and provide proof of citizenship, identity, residency, and Social Security Number. The cost of an EDL is $15 in addition to the regular driver’s license fee. The license is valid for up to four years and can be renewed in person or online.
Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White hailed the launch of the EDL program as a major step forward in providing residents with a convenient and secure form of identification for international travel. He urged residents to take advantage of the program and apply for an enhanced driver’s license before their next trip abroad.
“I am pleased to announce the launch of the enhanced driver’s license program in Illinois,” said Secretary White. “This program will make it easier for residents to travel to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean without needing a passport. I encourage all Illinois residents who plan to travel internationally to apply for an EDL and enjoy the convenience and security it offers.”
The launch of the EDL program comes at a time when the demand for secure forms of identification for international travel is on the rise. With the enhanced driver’s license, residents can now travel to select countries without needing to carry a passport, making the process more streamlined and efficient.
In addition to being a convenient form of identification for international travel, the enhanced driver’s license also serves as a standard driver’s license and can be used for everyday activities such as driving, banking, and purchasing age-restricted items.
The Illinois Secretary of State’s office has set up dedicated processing centers at select locations throughout the state to assist residents with applying for an enhanced driver’s license. These centers are equipped with the latest technology to ensure that the application process is quick and efficient.
Residents who are interested in applying for an enhanced driver’s license are encouraged to visit the Secretary of State’s website for more information on eligibility requirements and the application process. They can also contact the office directly to schedule an appointment at a processing center near them.
The launch of the enhanced driver’s license program in Illinois has been met with enthusiasm from residents who see it as a convenient and secure way to travel internationally. Many residents have already applied for an EDL and are eager to test out its capabilities on their next trip abroad.
“I applied for an enhanced driver’s license as soon as I heard about the program,” said Sarah Johnson, a resident of Chicago. “I travel to Canada frequently for work, and having an EDL will make the process so much easier. I look forward to using it on my next trip.”
The Illinois Secretary of State’s office is optimistic that the enhanced driver’s license program will be a success and plans to expand it in the future to include more countries. The office is also working on partnerships with other states to create a seamless network of enhanced driver’s licenses for international travel.
