Washington State Introduces International Driver’s License Program for Foreign Visitors
Washington State has long been a popular destination for international travelers, with its stunning natural beauty, vibrant cities, and rich cultural heritage. Now, the state is making it even easier for foreign visitors to explore all that it has to offer by introducing a new International Driver’s License program.
The program, which is set to launch in early 2023, will allow foreign travelers to obtain an International Driver’s License that is valid for use in Washington State. This will make it easier for visitors from countries where English is not the primary language to navigate the state’s roads and highways safely and legally.
“We are excited to launch this new program, which we believe will be a game-changer for international travelers visiting Washington State,” said Governor Jay Inslee. “By allowing foreign visitors to obtain an International Driver’s License that is valid for use in our state, we are making it easier for them to explore all that Washington has to offer, from the stunning beauty of our national parks to the world-class shopping and dining options in our cities.”
To obtain an International Driver’s License in Washington State, foreign visitors will need to submit an application, along with proof of identity, proof of legal presence in the United States, and a fee of $50. The license will be valid for one year and can be renewed annually for a fee of $25.
In addition to making it easier for foreign visitors to drive legally in Washington State, the International Driver’s License program will also help to boost tourism and the state’s economy. According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, international travelers spend an average of $4,500 per trip in the state, supporting local businesses and creating jobs.
“We expect that the introduction of the International Driver’s License program will lead to an increase in international tourism in Washington State,” said Sarah Watson, Director of the Washington State Department of Tourism. “By making it easier for foreign visitors to explore our state, we are opening up new opportunities for businesses and communities to benefit from the economic impact of international tourism.”
In addition to the economic benefits, the International Driver’s License program is also expected to improve road safety in Washington State. By ensuring that foreign visitors have the necessary documentation to drive legally, the program will help to reduce the number of accidents involving foreign drivers and make the state’s roads safer for everyone.
“We know that driving in a foreign country can be challenging, especially if you are not familiar with the local traffic laws and signage,” said Mark Johnson, Director of the Washington State Department of Transportation. “By introducing the International Driver’s License program, we are helping to ensure that foreign visitors have the information and support they need to drive safely and confidently in Washington State.”
Overall, the introduction of the International Driver’s License program is seen as a positive development for Washington State and its tourism industry. By making it easier for foreign visitors to explore the state, the program will help to boost the economy, improve road safety, and showcase all that Washington has to offer to a global audience.
“We are thrilled to be launching this new program and look forward to welcoming even more international travelers to Washington State in the years to come,” said Governor Inslee. “By making it easier for foreign visitors to drive legally in our state, we are strengthening our ties with the global community and ensuring that Washington remains a top destination for travelers from around the world.”
