Louisiana Drivers Urged to Renew Licenses with Real ID Compliance
Louisiana residents are being reminded to renew their driver’s licenses, as the deadline for compliance with Real ID law approaches. The Real ID Act, which was passed by Congress in 2005, set higher security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. Louisiana residents must have a Real ID-compliant driver’s license by October 1, 2021, in order to board domestic flights and enter federal facilities.
The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) has been working to inform residents about the upcoming deadline and the requirements for obtaining a Real ID-compliant license. To renew a license with Real ID compliance, residents must provide proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency.
“Ensuring that Louisiana residents are aware of the Real ID requirements and have the necessary documents is a top priority for the OMV,” said Karen St. Germain, Commissioner of the Louisiana OMV. “We want to make the renewal process as seamless as possible for our residents, so we urge everyone to start gathering the required documents now.”
The Real ID Act was introduced as a way to enhance security measures and combat identity theft. The Act requires that all driver’s licenses and state-issued identification cards contain specific security features and information. In order to comply with the Act, Louisiana residents must provide original or certified copies of documents that verify their identity, Social Security number, and residency.
Acceptable documents for proof of identity include a birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, or permanent resident card. For proof of Social Security number, residents can provide their Social Security card, W-2 form, or SSA-1099 form. Proof of residency can be established with a utility bill, lease agreement, or mortgage statement.
In addition to the required documents, residents must also bring their current driver’s license or identification card when renewing with Real ID compliance. The cost of renewing a license with Real ID compliance is the same as a standard license renewal fee, which is $32 for a six-year renewal.
The Louisiana OMV has been working to expedite the renewal process for residents, offering extended hours at certain locations and online renewal options. Residents can also schedule appointments at OMV offices to reduce wait times and ensure a smooth renewal process.
“We understand that renewing a driver’s license can be a hassle, but we want to make it as easy as possible for our residents to comply with the Real ID requirements,” said St. Germain. “By providing multiple options for renewal and extending hours at certain locations, we hope to alleviate any potential stress or confusion.”
Louisiana residents who do not obtain a Real ID-compliant driver’s license by the October 1 deadline may encounter issues when trying to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities. Residents are encouraged to start the renewal process early and ensure they have all necessary documents in order to avoid any disruptions.
