Residents of Massachusetts are being reminded to update their driver’s license address following a change of address. Failure to update this information could lead to a fine or penalty if caught by law enforcement.
The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) requires drivers to notify them of any change of address within 30 days of moving to a new residence. This includes updating both the physical address on file as well as the mailing address if they are different.
“Keeping your driver’s license information up to date is not only necessary for legal reasons but also for your own convenience,” said Sarah Johnson, a spokesperson for the RMV. “Having the correct address on your license ensures that any important documents or notices from the RMV will reach you in a timely manner.”
To update their address, Massachusetts residents can visit the RMV website and fill out an online form. Alternatively, they can visit a local RMV office in person and complete the necessary paperwork. There is a fee of $25 for updating the address on a driver’s license.
“It’s a simple process that can be done quickly and easily,” Johnson added. “We encourage all residents to take the time to update their address as soon as possible.”
Failure to update a driver’s license address can result in a fine of up to $50, or even the suspension of driving privileges in extreme cases. Additionally, having incorrect information on file could cause problems in the event of a traffic stop or other interaction with law enforcement.
“We want to make sure that all Massachusetts drivers are in compliance with the law and have the proper documentation,” said Johnson. “By updating your address promptly, you can avoid any unnecessary complications down the line.”
For those who are unsure whether their address needs to be updated, Johnson suggests checking their current driver’s license to see if the information is correct. If there have been any changes, it’s important to notify the RMV as soon as possible.
“Even if you think your address is up to date, it’s always a good idea to double-check,” she said. “It’s better to be safe than sorry.”
