Mass RMV Announces Changes to Driver’s License Renewal Process
In a move to streamline the driver’s license renewal process and improve efficiency, the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) has announced new changes that will impact drivers across the state. The changes, which will go into effect on January 1st, 2022, are aimed at making it easier for drivers to renew their licenses and reducing wait times at RMV service centers.
One of the key changes is the introduction of online renewal options for driver’s licenses. Drivers will now have the option to renew their licenses online through the RMV’s website, eliminating the need to visit a service center in person. This new online renewal option is expected to not only save drivers time but also reduce the number of customers visiting RMV service centers, leading to shorter wait times for those who do need to visit in person.
The online renewal process will be available to eligible drivers who meet certain criteria, such as having a license that is not expired for more than one year, having a license that is not suspended, revoked, or canceled, and not needing to make any changes to their license information. Drivers who are eligible for online renewal will receive a notice in the mail with instructions on how to renew their license online.
In addition to the online renewal option, the RMV is also introducing a new appointment system for in-person license renewals. Instead of waiting in line at a service center, drivers will now be able to schedule an appointment online for a specific date and time to renew their license in person. This new appointment system is expected to help reduce wait times at service centers and improve the overall customer experience.
The RMV has also announced changes to the license renewal process for drivers who are over the age of 75. Starting January 1st, 2022, drivers who are 75 years old or older will be required to renew their licenses in person at a service center every five years, instead of every ten years as is currently the case. This change is aimed at ensuring that older drivers undergo regular vision screenings and other assessments to ensure they are still fit to drive safely.
