Michigan to issue temporary paper driver’s licenses due to unprecedented surge in applications
In response to a surge in driver’s license applications, the Michigan Secretary of State’s office has announced the implementation of temporary paper driver’s licenses. The move comes as the state continues to experience high demand for driver’s licenses, with wait times for appointments and the processing of applications reaching unprecedented levels.
The temporary paper driver’s licenses will be issued to applicants who have completed all necessary requirements for obtaining a driver’s license, but have not yet received their physical card in the mail. The paper licenses will be valid for a period of 60 days, during which time individuals will be able to use them as proof of their driving privileges.
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson explained the decision to issue temporary paper driver’s licenses as a way to alleviate the strain on the department’s resources and provide relief to applicants who have been waiting for extended periods of time to receive their licenses.
“We understand the frustration and inconvenience that applicants have been experiencing due to the backlog of applications,” Benson said in a statement. “By issuing temporary paper driver’s licenses, we hope to provide some relief to individuals who need to drive for work, school, or other essential purposes.”
The temporary paper driver’s licenses will be available for pick-up at Secretary of State branch offices, where individuals can present their proof of identity and driving eligibility to receive the temporary license. The paper licenses will feature the applicant’s photo and signature, as well as information on the expiration date and limitations of the temporary license.
In addition to issuing temporary paper driver’s licenses, the Secretary of State’s office is ramping up efforts to streamline the application process and reduce wait times for appointments. This includes expanding online services, increasing staffing levels, and implementing new technology to improve the efficiency of license processing.
Despite these efforts, the state continues to grapple with a backlog of driver’s license applications, which has been exacerbated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Many individuals have faced delays in scheduling appointments due to capacity restrictions at branch offices, while others have experienced delays in the processing of their applications due to staffing shortages and other logistical challenges.
The implementation of temporary paper driver’s licenses is expected to provide some relief to those who have been waiting for extended periods of time to receive their licenses. However, Secretary of State Benson stressed that the temporary licenses are not a long-term solution to the underlying issues facing the department.
“We recognize that issuing temporary paper driver’s licenses is not ideal, but it is a necessary step to address the current backlog of applications,” Benson said. “Our ultimate goal is to provide timely and efficient service to all applicants, and we are working tirelessly to achieve that goal.”
In the meantime, individuals who need to drive for essential purposes are encouraged to obtain a temporary paper driver’s license from their local branch office. The department will continue to monitor the situation closely and make adjustments as needed to ensure that individuals are able to receive their physical driver’s licenses in a timely manner.
