Minnesota Becomes the Latest State to Launch Digital Driver’s Licenses
In a world where everything is going digital, it seems only fitting that driver’s licenses would follow suit. Minnesota is the latest state to jump on the digital driver’s license bandwagon, offering residents the option to carry their license on their smartphone.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety announced the launch of the new digital driver’s license program, which allows residents to access their license through a smartphone app. The app, called “mn digital driver’s license,” is available for both iOS and Android devices and can be downloaded for free from the app store.
“We are excited to offer this new digital driver’s license option to our residents,” said Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington. “Not only does it provide added convenience, but it also enhances security and reduces the risk of identity theft.”
To obtain a digital driver’s license, Minnesota residents must download the app and follow the prompts to verify their identity. This process includes scanning a government-issued photo ID, taking a selfie for facial recognition, and providing biometric data such as fingerprints.
Once the verification process is complete, users will have access to a digital version of their driver’s license, which includes all the same information as a physical license, such as their name, address, date of birth, and driving privileges. The app also features a scannable QR code that can be used for identification purposes at bars, restaurants, and other establishments that require proof of age.
The digital driver’s license is encrypted and secured with biometric authentication to prevent unauthorized access. In the event that a smartphone is lost or stolen, users can remotely deactivate their digital license to protect their information.
While the digital driver’s license is optional, Minnesota officials are encouraging residents to consider making the switch for added convenience and security. In addition to being a more secure form of identification, the digital license eliminates the need to carry a physical card, reducing the risk of loss or theft.
“We understand that some people may be hesitant to go digital, but we believe that the benefits far outweigh any concerns,” said Harrington. “Not only does the digital license offer added security, but it also provides a more convenient way to access and share your identification.”

Several other states, including Iowa, Delaware, and Louisiana, have already introduced digital driver’s licenses, with plans for additional states to follow suit in the coming years.
