Mississippi Department of Transportation Announces Upcoming Changes to Driver’s Licenses

JACKSON, MS – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced upcoming changes to driver’s licenses in the state. These changes are aimed at improving security and making it easier for residents to obtain and renew their licenses.

One of the biggest changes coming to Mississippi driver’s licenses is the switch to a new design. The new licenses will feature a more modern look with updated security features to prevent counterfeiting and fraud. This change is part of MDOT’s ongoing efforts to stay ahead of evolving technology and keep residents safe on the roads.

In addition to the new design, MDOT is also introducing a new process for obtaining and renewing driver’s licenses. Starting in January 2023, residents will have the option to renew their licenses online, making it easier and more convenient to stay up to date with their credentials. This online renewal process will also help reduce long lines at DMV offices and streamline the overall experience for drivers.

“We are always looking for ways to improve the services we offer to the residents of Mississippi,” said MDOT spokesperson Sarah Adams. “These changes to the driver’s license process are just the latest example of our commitment to providing a safe and efficient transportation system for all.”

Another key change coming to Mississippi driver’s licenses is the addition of a REAL ID option. Starting in October 2023, residents will have the option to upgrade their licenses to a REAL ID, which will be required for domestic air travel and entry into federal facilities. The REAL ID option will require residents to provide additional documentation, such as a birth certificate or passport, to verify their identity.

“We want to make sure that Mississippi residents are prepared for the upcoming changes to federal identification requirements,” said Adams. “By offering the REAL ID option, we are helping residents to ensure that they have the proper credentials to travel and access federal facilities when needed.”

MDOT is also working on improving the overall efficiency of the driver’s license process. In addition to the online renewal option, the department is exploring ways to reduce wait times at DMV offices and make it easier for residents to schedule appointments for services. These efforts are part of MDOT’s larger goal of providing top-notch customer service to all Mississippians.

“We know that getting a driver’s license can be a frustrating experience for many people,” said Adams. “That’s why we are working hard to streamline the process and make it as painless as possible. We want to make sure that residents can quickly and easily get the credentials they need to drive legally in the state.”

Overall, the upcoming changes to Mississippi driver’s licenses are aimed at improving security, efficiency, and convenience for residents. By implementing a new design, offering online renewal options, and introducing the REAL ID option, MDOT is taking proactive steps to ensure that Mississippians have the proper credentials to drive and travel safely.

“We are excited to roll out these changes and make the driver’s license process easier for everyone,” said Adams. “We encourage residents to stay informed about the upcoming changes and take advantage of the new services we will be offering. Together, we can create a safer and more efficient transportation system for Mississippi.”
