Arizona Introduces New Driver’s License for Travelers
In response to the increasing demand for secure identification, Arizona has introduced a new driver’s license specifically designed for travelers. The new driver’s license, known as the Travel ID, is compliant with the REAL ID Act, which sets security standards for state-issued identification cards.
Starting January 1, 2023, travelers will be required to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities. The Travel ID will feature enhanced security features, such as a gold star in the upper right-hand corner, to indicate its compliance with the REAL ID Act.
Arizona residents can obtain a Travel ID by visiting their local Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) office and providing the necessary documentation, including proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency. The cost of a Travel ID is the same as a standard driver’s license, making it an affordable option for frequent travelers.
“We understand the importance of having a secure form of identification when traveling,” said Arizona Department of Transportation Director John Halikowski. “The Travel ID offers peace of mind to travelers and ensures they can continue to board flights and access federal facilities without any disruptions.”
In addition to being compliant with the REAL ID Act, the Travel ID can also be used for international travel to Canada and Mexico by land or sea. This added convenience makes the Travel ID a versatile option for travelers who frequently cross borders.
Arizona residents who already have a standard driver’s license can upgrade to a Travel ID at any time, even before their current license expires. The process for upgrading to a Travel ID is simple and can be completed in person at an MVD office.
“We encourage all Arizona residents who plan to travel domestically or internationally to obtain a Travel ID as soon as possible,” said Halikowski. “Having a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license will make traveling easier and more convenient for our residents.”
In addition to the new Travel ID, Arizona has also introduced a mobile driver’s license option for residents who prefer a digital form of identification. The mobile driver’s license, known as the mDL, can be accessed through a smartphone app and offers the same level of security as a physical driver’s license.
The mDL is encrypted and protected by biometric authentication, ensuring that it is secure and tamper-proof. Travelers can use their mDL to board flights, enter federal facilities, and even prove their age when purchasing alcohol or tobacco.
“We are proud to offer our residents a modern and convenient way to carry their driver’s license,” said Halikowski. “The mDL is the future of identification, and we are excited to be at the forefront of this technological advancement.”
Both the Travel ID and mDL are part of Arizona’s commitment to providing residents with secure and convenient forms of identification. By offering multiple options for identification, the state aims to meet the diverse needs of its residents and ensure their safety and security when traveling.
As the deadline for REAL ID enforcement approaches, Arizona residents are encouraged to apply for a Travel ID or upgrade to an mDL to ensure they are compliant with federal regulations. With these new driver’s license options, travelers can enjoy a seamless and hassle-free travel experience, both domestically and internationally.
