New Jersey to Roll Out Enhanced Driver’s License Program

In a bid to enhance security measures and streamline identification processes, the state of New Jersey has announced the launch of its new enhanced driver’s license program. The program, which will be rolled out in phases over the next year, seeks to provide residents with a more secure form of identification that can be used for a variety of purposes, including air travel and entry into federal facilities.

The enhanced driver’s license, or EDL, will feature a number of advanced security features designed to prevent fraud and counterfeiting. These features will include embedded microchips, biometric data, and tamper-resistant materials. In addition, the EDL will be compliant with the REAL ID Act, a federal law that sets standards for state-issued identification cards.

“This new program represents a significant step forward in our efforts to enhance security and protect our residents from identity theft and fraud,” said New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. “By implementing the enhanced driver’s license program, we are ensuring that our residents have access to a trusted and secure form of identification that meets the highest standards of security.”

The rollout of the EDL program will be conducted in phases, with the first phase set to begin in January 2022. During this phase, residents will have the option to apply for an enhanced driver’s license when renewing their regular driver’s license. The cost of the EDL will be slightly higher than that of a standard driver’s license, but officials say the added security features will more than justify the price difference.

“We understand that some residents may be concerned about the cost of the enhanced driver’s license, but we believe that the enhanced security and convenience it offers are well worth the investment,” said New Jersey Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Jane Smith. “We are committed to working with residents to ensure that the transition to the new program is as smooth and seamless as possible.”

In addition to providing residents with a more secure form of identification, the EDL program is also expected to provide a number of benefits in terms of convenience and efficiency. For example, residents with an enhanced driver’s license will be able to use it as a single form of identification for a variety of purposes, including air travel, entry into federal facilities, and access to certain financial institutions.

“We believe that the enhanced driver’s license program will offer residents a more convenient and efficient way to prove their identity in a variety of situations,” said Smith. “By providing a single, trusted form of identification that meets the highest standards of security, we are ensuring that our residents can travel, conduct business, and access services with confidence and peace of mind.”

As part of the rollout of the enhanced driver’s license program, the New Jersey Department of Motor Vehicles will launch an extensive public education campaign to inform residents about the new program and its benefits. The campaign will include information on how to apply for an enhanced driver’s license, what the security features are, and what the cost and eligibility requirements are.

“We want to make sure that all residents are aware of the enhanced driver’s license program and how it can benefit them,” said Smith. “That’s why we are launching a comprehensive public education campaign to provide residents with all the information they need to make an informed decision about applying for an EDL.”

Overall, the launch of the enhanced driver’s license program represents a significant step forward in the state’s efforts to enhance security and protect residents from identity theft and fraud. By providing residents with a more secure and convenient form of identification, New Jersey is ensuring that its residents can travel, conduct business, and access services with confidence and peace of mind.
