Minnesota to Introduce New Driver’s License Design in 2023

In an effort to enhance security features and stay ahead of counterfeiters, Minnesota will be rolling out a new design for the state’s driver’s licenses and identification cards in 2023. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Driver and Vehicle Services (DPS-DVS) announced the upcoming change, citing the need for increased protection against identity theft and fraud.

The new design will feature several advanced security features, including a laser-engraved primary portrait of the cardholder and a unique color-shifting overlay that is only visible under certain lighting conditions. Additionally, the card will contain a tactile feature for individuals with visual impairments, making it easier to identify the card as authentic.

“We are constantly evaluating and updating our driver’s license and identification card designs to ensure they are as secure as possible,” said Mary Olson, director of Driver and Vehicle Services. “The new design will incorporate the latest technology to protect Minnesotans from identity theft and fraud.”

In addition to the enhanced security features, the new Minnesota driver’s license will also have a more modern and streamlined look. The card will feature a larger primary portrait and updated graphics, making it easier to read and more aesthetically pleasing.

The transition to the new design will begin in early 2023, with current driver’s licenses and identification cards being gradually replaced as individuals renew their cards or apply for new ones. The DPS-DVS will provide detailed information to Minnesotans on how to obtain the new cards as they become available.

“We understand that change can be challenging, but we believe this new design is necessary to protect the personal information of our residents,” said Olson. “We are committed to making the transition as smooth as possible for all Minnesotans.”

While the exact cost of the new driver’s licenses and identification cards has not yet been determined, the DPS-DVS has stated that there will not be an additional fee for the new design. Individuals will pay the standard renewal or application fee for their cards, with the new design included at no extra charge.

The announcement of the new driver’s license design comes at a time when identity theft and fraud are on the rise, with criminals becoming increasingly sophisticated in their methods. By implementing enhanced security features, Minnesota hopes to stay one step ahead of counterfeiters and protect its residents from becoming victims of identity theft.

“We take the security of our driver’s licenses and identification cards very seriously,” said Olson. “The new design is just one of the many measures we are taking to ensure the safety and security of Minnesotans.”

The DPS-DVS will be providing updates and information on the rollout of the new driver’s license design in the coming months, including instructions on how to obtain the new cards and what to do with old ones. Minnesotans are encouraged to stay informed and be on the lookout for announcements from the DPS-DVS regarding the new design.

As the state prepares to introduce the new Minnesota driver’s license design in 2023, residents can rest assured that their personal information will be better protected than ever before. With advanced security features and a modern look, the new design aims to enhance security and provide peace of mind to all Minnesotans.
