North Carolina to Begin Issuing Real ID Driver’s Licenses
Starting next month, North Carolina will begin issuing Real ID driver’s licenses to residents who wish to have an official form of identification that complies with federal security standards. This new program is part of a nationwide effort to enhance security and prevent identity theft and fraud.
The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 in response to the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation to improve the security of state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. The Act sets federal standards for driver’s licenses and identification cards, including requirements for proof of identity and residency, as well as new security features to prevent counterfeiting and tampering.
North Carolina residents who wish to obtain a Real ID driver’s license will need to provide additional documentation when applying, such as a passport or birth certificate, proof of Social Security number, and two documents showing proof of residency. These requirements are meant to verify the applicant’s identity and ensure that the information provided is accurate.
The new Real ID driver’s licenses will have a gold star in the upper right corner, indicating that the holder has provided the necessary documentation to prove their identity. This will make it easier for travelers to board domestic flights without having to carry a passport or additional forms of identification.
In addition to the enhanced security features, the Real ID driver’s licenses will also be required for entry into federal facilities, such as military bases and nuclear power plants, as well as for accessing certain federal benefits and services. This is part of the Department of Homeland Security’s efforts to enhance security and prevent fraudulent use of identification documents.
North Carolina residents have the option to upgrade to a Real ID driver’s license when they renew their current license or apply for a new one. The cost of the Real ID driver’s license is the same as a regular driver’s license, with an additional fee for the new security features and processing.
The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has been working to educate residents about the new Real ID driver’s licenses and the requirements for obtaining one. They have set up information booths at DMV offices and launched a website with detailed instructions on how to apply for a Real ID driver’s license.
The Real ID driver’s license program is expected to enhance security and prevent identity theft and fraud in North Carolina. By providing residents with a more secure form of identification, the state aims to protect the privacy and security of its citizens while also complying with federal regulations.
Overall, the introduction of Real ID driver’s licenses in North Carolina is a positive step towards enhancing security and preventing identity theft and fraud. Residents who wish to obtain a Real ID driver’s license should start preparing the necessary documentation and be ready to upgrade their current license when it expires. The new security features and benefits of the Real ID driver’s license will make it a valuable form of identification for both everyday use and travel.
