Hawaii residents will soon have to renew their state driver’s licenses as new requirements come into effect in the coming months. The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced that all residents must renew their driver’s licenses in person at designated driver licensing centers to comply with the Real ID Act.
The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 in response to the September 11 terrorist attacks. The Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. These standards include requiring applicants to provide documentation to verify their identity, date of birth, social security number, and address.
Hawaii residents who have a driver’s license that was issued before October 15, 2018, will need to renew their licenses in person at a designated driver licensing center by the deadline of October 1, 2021. After this date, those who have not renewed their licenses will not be able to use them as identification for federal purposes such as boarding domestic flights or entering federal facilities.
To renew their driver’s licenses, residents will need to bring specific documentation to the driver licensing center. This includes proof of identity such as a passport or birth certificate, proof of social security number such as a social security card or W-2 form, and two documents verifying their Hawaii residential address such as a utility bill or bank statement.
In addition to the required documents, residents will also need to pay a renewal fee. The fee for a four-year driver’s license renewal is $40, while an eight-year renewal costs $72. Payment can be made by cash, check, or credit card.
The renewal process will also involve taking a new driver’s license photo and passing a vision test. Residents who wear glasses or contacts will need to bring them to the driver licensing center for the vision test.
