The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, with the goal of increasing security standards for state-issued identification cards. However, with the launch of the new online renewal system, residents can now skip the trip to the DMV and renew their Real ID driver’s license from the comfort of their own homes.
To renew their Real ID driver’s license online, residents will need to visit the DMV’s website and follow the instructions provided. They will be required to input their license number, date of birth, and the last four digits of their Social Security number to access their account. From there, they can review their personal information, pay the renewal fee, and upload any necessary documents.

For those who do choose to visit a DMV office in person, the department has implemented safety protocols to protect both customers and employees from COVID-19. This includes requiring all customers and employees to wear masks, maintaining social distancing, and regularly disinfecting high-touch surfaces.
The California DMV is also reminding residents that they can renew their Real ID driver’s license up to six months before the expiration date. This allows residents to renew their license at their convenience and avoid any last-minute rush.
